About the Ministry
Keichu-do Karate, Santa Barbara is a ministry of Calvary Chapel Santa Barbara. The ministry’s vision is to bring glory to God by fulfilling the great commission through martial arts training.
The mission of Keichu-do Karate, Santa Barbara is to share Jesus Christ with the lost and disciple the saved. We do this by teaching our art through a Christian worldview, fully acknowledging that we are first to love the Lord our God with all our heart, soul and mind and secondly love our neighbor as ourselves; and by developing relationships within the martial arts community, keeping in mind our desire to share the Gospel.
About Keichu-do Karate
Keichu-do Karate was first taught publicly in 1960. The system was organized by Soke Karl W. Marx with the objective of providing practical self defense skills to modern Americans. Developed on American soil, the Keichu-do system is built on the classical techniques of karate and jujitsu. In 1974 after 5 years of scrutinizing, Keichu-do was accepted into the United Stated Karate Association. Since that time, Keichu-do students have won over 100 world championships titles.
Keichu-do systematically develops important skills beginning with the first lessons taught. As they progress, students refine these basic skills, adding to them for the rest of their training. Each level of training builds on the foundations of the previous ones. For this reason, Keichu students are some of the best trained and most well-rounded martial artists.
The style name "Keichu-do" translates as "Total devotion to the Way" that Way being Jesus Christ. Keichu students have always known that dedication is the key to success in any endeavor. Mr. Marx, as head of the Keichu family, instructs that this devotion has a higher, spiritual emphasis. At Keichu-do Karate, Santa Barbara we are not ashamed of the gospel of Jesus Christ. While we gladly teach students of all faiths, it is our prayer that all will come to know the Peace of Christ.
How the Program Works
Each training session begins with prayer. During training, students will engage in a variety of activities, including, but not limited to, learning new techniques, practicing previously learned skills, sparring, grappling, conditioning, stretching, and developing expertise in self-defense methods. Each class ends with a short devotion and prayer.
Like many martial arts styles, Keichu-do uses different colored belts to signify rank. The progression is as follows: white, yellow, orange, green, purple; brown, and black.
Students progress from one belt to another by undergoing rigorous belt tests, which encompass all techniques learned (for example, during the black belt test, students are tested on all techniques from white belt to black belt). Belt tests are scheduled on an as needed basis. In-between belt tests, students test for stripes, which represent the new material they have learned on their way to earning a new belt. Stripe tests are less formal and are customarily held at the end of regular classes.
